OUR METHOD

Private tutoring for struggling readers, writers and students with dyslexia.

We are diagnostic and prescriptive

This means we use both formal and informal assessments along with observation to determine the exact weaknesses and learning needs of each student. Then, we craft individualized lessons to explicitly teach phonics, spelling, and language skills. We are expert teachers who understand the complexities of the English language and can pinpoint and remediate your child’s weaknesses.

Our lessons are both targeted and strategic.

This means we take care to work on the specific skills and concepts that are difficult for each individual student. We do not follow a pre-packaged curriculum or buy into gimmicky educational promises. Rather, we use deliberate methods to remediate persistent error problems and develop fluency with reading and accuracy with spelling. Read more about the Structured Literacy approach here.

We understand dyslexia.

The dyslexic learning profile is often misunderstood or ignored in public schools. Learning to read is a complex neurological task. Those with dyslexia face a spectrum of struggles while learning to read and write. We are supportive, nurturing, and effective teachers to those with dyslexia.

Frequently Asked Questions

ABOUT PRIVATE TUTORING

Absolutely. Working with students with dyslexia is our specialty. Whether or not they have a formal diagnosis does not matter. Our teachers are trained to comb through a child’s skill set to find the weaknesses that make up their learning profile. Not all children with dyslexia struggle in the same way. That is why we do not take a one-size-fits-all approach to intervention. We will understand your child and design a plan using the Structured Literacy approach that suits their needs.

We sure can. Many students, even those with dyslexia, do not qualify for special education because they aren’t struggling enough. According to their test scores, at least. But you know your child. You know what they are capable of, how they show frustration, and perhaps you even have a family history of reading struggles. We can pinpoint the subtle learning challenges that diagnostic testing overlooks. It is often these subtle challenges that are resulting in huge frustration for the child. We care about solving these kinds of problems, regardless of what the test scores say.

It depends. Many public schools in Massachusetts used balanced literacy. This is a little bit of everything yet far too little direct instruction in phonics and the structure of the English language. At the studio we use the Structured Literacy approach. We know children do not absorb the code of written language through osmosis so we teach it to them directly.

We conduct progress monitoring regularly and will share this information with you. It is possible that your child’s progress will not show up on grade level assessments or classroom assignments right away, especially if they are working well below grade level. We are happy to write a progress report for you on request every few months.

Absolutely! Just write to the teacher to give them permission to speak with us. We will happily share information with each other to better inform our teaching. We will cc you on all communications.

This is unlikely. Children who are behind in reading in first grade are likely to be behind in reading in fourth grade. It is better to respond to the earliest signs of struggle and intervene right away. This way a child experiences less frustration and the gap between him and his peers does not get too large.

We are not selling education as a product. We are not gimicky. We are not promoting one particular commercial program to solve all kinds of reading problems. Cohasset Learning Studio teachers have a deep appreciation for the reading brain, understand the complexities of the English language, and can choose and apply the appropriate techniques needed to remediate your particular child. We only employ teachers with teaching degrees and teaching licences and/or training in Orton-Gillingham. Most importantly, our teachers are prepared to use the Structured Literacy approach to teach reading and writing skills directly and systematically.

It depends. We serve a variety of students. Rather than promise to solve problems in a certain time period we promise to understand your child and work diligently to craft an effective intervention plan for their precise learning needs.

We had Cole’s teacher conference this week and his reading scores improved from beginning of the year when he was ‘approaching 4th grade level’ to ‘at 4th grade level’, particularly for ‘comprehension/informational text’.
